STudio project: Brooklyn bridge park pier 5
Cornell University - LA7010 Urban Design and Planning Graduate Studio (Fall semester 2011)
Professor: Peter Trowbridge
With permission from MVVA, Inc., we were able to use base plans from Pier 5 for educational purposes in our studio. The goal of the studio was to analyze Pier 5 in context with its surrounding demographic, economic, ecological, and infrastructural needs and propose suitable and sustainable design and programming for the future pier.
My approach was to provide multi-functional, flexible space that allowed for different experiences of Pier 5 so that every visit sees it in a different condition. A sculpted concrete park serves as a skateboarding area for teenagers, especially those who live in Brooklyn as a large skate park is not yet an amenity in this borough. An open lawn area serves on as recreational space as well as event space for future restaurants across the street. A wooden deck ( a "stage") that cantilevers over the water uses the Manhattan skyline both as a focal point and as a backdrop for planned events as well as the everyday stroll. A pebble beach draws out the minute tidal change experience as well as another spot for kayaks to launch.
Materials such as wooden benches or granite curbs and steps would be reclaimed. Underground stormwater retainment serve to reduce surface runoff as well as provide irrigation for plants onsite. I also graded the site so that access throughout Pier 5 is ADA-compliant.
